Slower speed coming for school zones
Metro Halifax - Nov 3, 2011
As promised, new legislation has been brought forward aiming to drop speed limits in school zones.
When children are present and the surrounding speed limit is 50 km/h, the school zone speed would drop to 30 km/h from 50 km/h.
In areas where the surrounding speed limits are higher, the school zone limit stays at 50 km/h when children are present.
The legislation, once proclaimed, will go into effect next fall.
The province announced last spring the plan to bring this legislation forward and said there will be a driver awareness campaign and new signs posted in school zones.
“Our organization feels that reducing the speed limit to 30 kilometres per hour in school zones will make it safer for children in our communities,” said Ismael Aquino, chair of Safe Communities HRM, in a statement.
